Ready to find that one photography workshop that’s made for you? Use these tips so you can book your place in a workshop that will suit your photography level and style.

Whether you're an avid phone snapper or a budding photographer, our photography workshops across the UK are designed to elevate your skills and grow your love for capturing the world in all its authentic glory.

Knowing which photography workshop to go for can be a difficult decision, especially when there are so many available around the UK. We're here today to give you a few tips to help you find the best photography workshop to suit your needs and style.

Make sure you understand your skill level

Our biggest advice here would be to be honest with yourself. There’s nothing wrong with saying you’re just starting out, and there’s nothing wrong with saying you need a workshop to challenge you a bit more.

The best photography workshop for you will be one that fits in with your experience and skill level. The last thing you want is to be sat in a workshop where you don’t understand what’s going on, or one where you already know about everything being taught!

Our photography workshops

If you're just dipping your toes in the water, our introductory photography workshops are a great starting point. These sessions focus on foundational skills and essential techniques to get you comfortable with your camera. For example, our ‘Introduction to…’ photography workshops are ideal for getting to grips with the basics, giving you a solid foundation to learn more in the future.

We have a few beginner workshops coming up, including An Introduction to Landscape Photography and An Introduction to Portrait Lighting. Check them out and see if they take your fancy!

If you’ve already mastered the basics — well done! You’re ready to take it up a notch. Our intermediate photography workshops offer more advanced techniques and creative insights.

Take a look at our Street Photography in Print Masterclass with Emily Renier as an example This workshop delves into the art of street photography, covering everything from candid shots to post-processing techniques, helping you to refine your skills and develop your unique style.

Know your photography genres

We all know that photography is a vast field. There are countless photography genres out there to explore, each offering their own challenges and rewards. We’d say that selecting a genre that aligns with your skills and interests will make for the best learning experience.

Portrait photography workshops

If capturing the essence and personalities of individuals is your cup of tea, a portrait photography workshop might be your calling.

Our Introduction to Portrait Lighting Workshop focuses on lighting techniques essential for creating unique portraits made for double-takes. You'll explore how to stage and experiment with your own lighting setups, including Flash and Continuous Lighting.

Food photography workshops

For those who find joy in photographing their foodie creations, consider booking yourself onto a food photography workshop. While we currently don’t have specific food photography workshops year-round, bear in mind that our general workshops often cover techniques and skills that you could apply to food photography.

Street photography workshops

Being based in the heart of London, we’re extremely grateful for the hustle and bustle of city life that surrounds us. If the spontaneity and energy of urban life excites you, our street photography workshops are made for you. You learn how to observe and document the world around you, capturing candid moments complemented by rich stories.

Outdoor and wildlife photography workshops

Whether it's landscapes, wildlife, or plants, we frequently have nature photography workshops to help you capture stunning outdoor images. An Introduction to Seabird Photography was one of our most popular summer workshops that is likely to return each summer, and our Capturing Christmas series of events will feature this winter too.

Will you opt for specialised or general photography workshops?

When choosing a workshop, it's important to decide whether you want a specialised focus or a broader approach. We’d say it’s a good idea to attend a bit of both to give you a well-rounded experience.

Specialised workshops will, naturally, dive into specific photography areas, with more specific training and advanced techniques related to the genre. For instance, our Documentary-Style Wedding & Family Photography Workshop is perfect for those looking to break into wedding and other family-related photography fields. You'll learn how to capture the emotional and candid moments of a wedding day, developing skills that set your work apart in this competitive field.

If you're looking to build a broad set of skills, general workshops are ideal. They cover a wide range of topics and techniques, providing a solid foundation in photography. Our ‘Introduction to …’ workshops are great for this.

Maximise your workshop experience as much as possible

To make the most out of your workshop experience, preparation is key. Make sure to bring any necessary equipment, including your camera, lenses, memory cards, and a fully charged battery. We usually have equipment available for you to use on the day, but specific workshops might require additional gear, so be sure to check the workshop details beforehand.

Our best advice would be to get stuck in and get involved. Engage with our lovely leaders and experts, network with the other participants, ask questions, and never be afraid to get feedback on your work. Who knows? You may leave our doors with a brand new perspective and ideas you’d have never considered before.
