The FUJIFILM GFX100S II steps up its performance while decreasing its weight, for an even more versatile large format option. In this article, we take a look at exactly what’s been improved compared to the previous model in the series – the GFX100S.

Sensor and processor

Combining the all-new GFX 102MP CMOS II sensor with X-Processor 5, the imaging capabilities of the GFX100S II are given a serious upgrade.

For starters, the improved pixel structure of the new sensor has enabled a base sensitivity setting of ISO 80 for images – expandable to ISO 40. Compared with the base ISO 100 (expandable to 50) of the previous model, the new camera offers improved dynamic range and lower noise.

New micro lenses also increase light use efficiency at the edges of the sensor, improving image quality and AF accuracy around the perimeter of the frame.

Overall autofocus performance is also given a boost thanks to X-Processor 5 – which enables the advanced Face and Eye Detection algorithm innovations seen in the latest Fujifilm cameras, as well as AI-powered detection settings for tracking a variety of common subjects – such as animals, birds, cars, bikes and planes.

Improved sensor readout speed allows for an additional two frames-per-second in Continuous Shooting mode, going from a maximum of 5fps to 7fps, as well as reduced buffer time.

The latest Film Simulation mode – REALA ACE – has also been added to the GFX100S II, taking the total number of profiles up to 20.

On top of this, the Pixel Shift Multi-Shot feature has been given extended functionality with a new Real Colour mode. This setting makes four RAW files, shifted by a pixel each, and generates a 102-megapixel image with true colour. This takes a quarter of the time and data volume of the ultra-high-resolution 400-megapixel setting, which combines 16 images shifted by half a pixel and remains as an option.

Improved IBIS and EVF

The GFX100S II has an upgraded internal stabilisation system, offering an additional 2.0 stops of benefit compared to the GFX100S. Now with up to 8.0 stops of assistance, the camera’s handheld imaging ability is significantly enhanced.

Another area of improvement is the EVF, which has an increased resolution of 5.76 million dots, as opposed to the 3.69 million dot EVF of the previous model. The viewfinder’s magnification has gone from 0.77x to 0.84x, granting excellent visibility.

With these upgrades to the body of the new camera, you’d expect an increase in weight – but amazingly, the GFX100S II has shaved weight off compared to its predecessor while retaining similar ergonomic dimensions. At 883g, this is the lightest GFX System camera to feature a 102-megapixel sensor.

These improvements come together to create a camera with excellent handheld performance, ideal for versatile creators.

Video performance

Enabled by upgraded hardware, the GFX100S II has kicked its video capabilities up a notch. Now able to record 4K/30p 4:2:2 10-bit to internal storage, as well as Apple ProRes via USB Type C cable to an external device, the new camera is right at home amid professional video workflows.

Minimum video ISO has gone from 200 to 100, granting lower image noise and improved dynamic range. The F-Log2 profile is now available, offering over 13 stops of dynamic range and improved post-production flexibility.

With the ability to record and output different video formats, you can record F-Log2 footage externally while simultaneously recording with a Film Simulation in-camera, or vice versa. This gives a much better idea of how graded F-Log2 footage will turn out and helps you make more informed decisions at the principal photography stage.

Finally, the GFX100S II has native Camera to Cloud integration, allowing the immediate upload of photos and videos to Frame.io during production, and paving the way to modern, professional workflows.

With improved specifications across the board, but the same comfortable ergonomics and a slightly lighter build, the GFX100S II opens up the functionality of the GFX System to a wider range of image makers than ever before.
