The FUJIFILM X-T50 packs more imaging capability into a smaller and more lightweight body, making it the ultimate camera for travel and street photography. In this article, we take an in-depth look at what’s been improved, and compare it with the FUJIFILM X-T5.

Sensor and processor

Facilitated by the latest X Series sensor and Fujifilm’s most advanced image processor, the X-T50 has seriously stepped up its performance, matching the X-T5’s enormous 40.2 megapixels thanks to its use of the same X-Trans CMOS 5 HR sensor.

With the X-Processor 5, the X-T50 also has access to AI-powered subject detection, which enables accurate AF tracking of a variety of animals and vehicles. Plus, it has enhanced stills sensitivity of ISO 125 to 12,800, expandable to ISO 64 to 51,200. Maximum shutter speed is also increased to a massive 1/180,0000 sec.

The improved hardware affects the camera’s video capabilities, too, with the X-T50 able to record footage at a maximum resolution of 6.2K/30p, alongside options for 4K/60p and Full HD/240p. Additionally, for those who enjoy colour grading their footage, the X-T50 features the F-Log2 profile.

In-body image stabilisation

The X-T50 is the first camera in its range to feature in-body image stabilisation (IBIS). Vibrations of the image sensor are detected and compensated by internal motors across five axes, reducing camera shake and helping you frame images while working handheld.

Offering up to 7.0 stops of benefit – the same amount of stabilisation as found in the high-end X-T5 – this system enormously expands the camera’s ability to work handheld in low-light conditions and at long focal lengths. The feature also works for video recording, enabling smooth footage while filming without support accessories.

Film Simulation dial

For the first time on any X Series camera, the X-T50 features a dedicated Film Simulation dial. Located on the top of the body, this control puts emphasis on the importance of expression by empowering your ability to play with colour and tonality. You can now switch effortlessly between iconic Fujifilm profiles, as well as your own customised looks.

The X-T50 also features the full complement of 20 Film Simulation modes – including the most recent REALA ACE profile, which combines crisp tonal gradation with a realistic rendering of colours.

Other changes to the physical design of the X-T50 include a new, rounded body shape that offers improved handling – without compromising on a small and discreet build, which is one of the camera’s great strengths. It’s important to remember that all of these imaging capabilities are squeezed into a body that weighs just 438g (including battery and memory card), compared to the X-T5’s 557g.

In short, this addition to the X Series lineup balances strong imaging performance with a highly portable build – all while prioritising the ability to explore new looks and experiment with colour.
