With a skill set that’s as sharp as it is diverse, there are few UK-based photographers so equipped to teach invaluable wildlife photography techniques as Alan Hewitt. With output spanning stills imaging, filmmaking, writing and photo safari leadership, Alan is quite the expert.
Whatever the creative medium, one thing remains unwavering – a deep love of the natural world. Alan has documented some of the animal kingdom’s most exciting specimens, from the birds of his nearby Farne Islands, to the mammals of Africa’s Maasai Mara.
Through consistent and impactful contributions, created with his trusted X Series cameras and lenses, Alan was proudly appointed as an official FUJIFILM X-Photographer a few years ago.
Join us to photograph a range of magnificent birds of prey with the scenic backdrop of rural Northumberland. Photograph different species of birds in natural habitats and some, in more elaborate settings to vary compositional techniques. This Xperience Day is open to photographers of all levels, with a range of beginner and advanced techniques on offer.
Take this opportunity to get hands on with the new X-H2S X Series camera, as well as the new XF 150-600mm lens. X Series cameras are optimal wildlife photography tools, with the correct settings dialled in. You’re welcome to bring your own system, with versatile zooms like the XF70-300mmF4-5.6 R LM OIS WR encouraged, although a range of Fujifilm cameras and lenses will be available on the day.
Photographers travelling lighter are also welcome to borrow tripods and monopods. A packed lunch, water, comfy shoes and weather-appropriate clothing are also essential.
A free 16GB SD card will be yours to keep, although we recommend bringing your own as a spare. To make the most of the continuous shooting features, we can loan you a CF Express B card on the day but we will need to download all images to a USB pen drive or external hard disc drive that you bring.
· Meet at 10:00 AM for a hot drink with Alan and your fellow photographers. Enjoy a short briefing session, outlining settings and the techniques you’ll learn.
· You will learn about how the birds are adapted to life in the wild. Time with Alan on a one-to-one basis and in small groups is guaranteed.
· Break for a 45-minute lunch, including an opportunity to catch up on your fellow photographers’ highlights of the day.
· Continue to new locations to photograph as-yet-unseen bird varieties. More new skills will be introduced and developed through practical application. End the day around 5:00 PM.
You will learn about the techniques of photographing wildlife which can be used to photograph species in the wild. In order to achieve professional-looking results, the correct camera settings are essential. Alan will offer an insight into his own workflow, including exposure modes, photometry and autofocus settings.
Wildlife photography is just as much about fieldcraft as it is kit. You’ll be instructed on the nuances of approaching subjects, as well as how to position yourself and frame for beautiful photographs.

Tickets do not include any other expenses, train fares, lunch, taxi fares, parking charges, etc. Unless otherwise stated. Toilets are available at the falconry centre, but facilities in the countryside are very limited.
Once you have purchased a ticket, your place on the day will be reserved. If circumstances change and you need to cancel, please let us know ten days before the event and we will happily issue a full refund. Places cancelled after this time are non-refundable.
