Who will be joining you?

Before we share the details of our Introduction to Macro Photography workshop, let’s get to know the FUJIFILM Product Specialist who will be accompanying you.

Carl Hare

Carl Hare pairs creative experience with technical know-how as a freelance photographer and FUJIFILM UK product specialist. His photography spans many genres, and while his professional roots trace back to weddings, Carl is equally adept at studio portraiture, street, macro, landscapes and wildlife.

Keen to share his wealth of knowledge, Carl has delivered photography workshops for close to a decade. His passion for the outdoors is a constant source of inspiration, and when he can combine it with his teaching skills, there’s simply nothing better – for him and his students.

What can you expect from our Macro Photography Workshop?

This workshop is aimed at aspiring macro photographers of a beginner or intermediate level. While comprehensive training and guidance will be provided on the day, it would be useful if all attendees had a basic understanding of the exposure triangle — aperture, shutter speeds and ISO.

Itinerary for the day

11:30: The first part of the day is classroom-based learning, with Carl taking you through photography and macro fundamentals.

14:00: Lunch break

14:30 - 17:30: The remainder of the afternoon will be spent putting the learning into action with a practical session. Expect lots of hands-on and image-making opportunities.

What will you learn?

This full-day experience will provide a comprehensive grounding in macro photography. Carl will cover a wide range of techniques and ideas, starting with a recap of basic exposure settings before diving into specifics, including macro vs close-up, fundamental equipment needs, magnification ratios, lighting and flash settings.

For the practical part of the workshop, you will receive picture-taking advice, including:

  • Which camera lenses and settings to use
  • Tips for accurate focusing
  • Depth-of-field control
  • Compositional guidance
  • How to keep backgrounds clean and uncluttered

What kit do you need?

You’re welcome to bring your own set-up, although a selection of the latest FUJIFILM cameras and lenses suitable for this type of photography will be available on the day.  As this workshop is part of our Lens Festival, we’re particularly keen for you to explore the best lens features for macro photography.

The XF30mm F2.8 R LM WR Macro, 60mmF2.4 R Macro, XF80mmF2.8 R LM OIS WR Macro lenses are all ideal. However, close-focusing optics and XF extension tubes are also suitable.

We’ll also provide tripods and lighting equipment for the practical session in the afternoon. If there is anything else you’d like to try, please email us at fujifilm_schoolUK@fujifilm.com or call 0203 486 4610, and we’ll try our very best to accommodate you.

This workshop is fully accessible and is suited for all photographers with a moderate activity level. The venue and studio are both accessible for wheelchair users.
