Who will be joining you?

Before we share the details of what you’ll get up to in this event for photographers in London, let’s get to know more about the photography guide who will be accompanying you throughout this exciting event.

Emily Renier

Emily is one of our official FUJIFILM Ambassadors. Her speciality is wedding and family documentary photography, however, she also has a keen passion and experience in street photography.

Capturing the extraordinary in the ordinary of everyday life has been her focus for many years, but she picked up her first FUJIFILM camera in 2018. Since then she has developed her career as a documentary photographer by spending much of her spare time in the streets and the underground of London, learning the crafts of observation and composition.

Although some of her street photography work has been exhibited, the purpose of street photography for Emily is more meditative and mindful. She finds that the more time she spends photographing on the streets, finally letting go of any expectations or commercially imposed limits, the more her creative skills improve — both compositionally and technically.

Location: Fujifilm House of Photography, London

Meeting point: Studio, Basement

What can you expect from our street photography workshop

This workshop is aimed at aspiring documentary and street photographers of an intermediate level.

While comprehensive training and guidance will be provided on the day, it would be useful if all attendees had a basic understanding of the exposure triangle – aperture, shutter speeds and ISO.

Itinerary for the day

Please aim to arrive 15 minutes before your session time.

11:30: Arrival and introductions

11:45: Emily will introduce herself and give an insight into her street photography work.

12:00: The full introduction to street photography will begin, including a discussion about different styles, key rules and why some of them need breaking. Most importantly, you’ll delve into the works of past and present legends in the field but this time, in print.

Together, you will explore the importance of studying printed images rather than on screens. You’ll pour over some images, identify what you love, and hone in on the skills used by those artists.

14:00: Break for lunch

14:30: You’ll start your afternoon session by sharing some of your favourite street images that you have taken in the past (sharing is not compulsory for those who are feeling shy!). You’ll also then have an opportunity to discuss aspects of the genre you love and those you enjoy less.

15:00:  Emily will introduce the different practical tasks of the day (each task will give students a chance to practise specific skills learned in the morning session) and she’ll also give a quick overview of today’s London photo walk.

17:30: You’ll meet back at the House of Photography and discuss how the photography exercises went. You’ll recap on what we enjoyed or found more difficult and what skills you’d like to develop in the future. There will also be a chance to use the Fujifilm printing kiosks to print an image you captured during the practical part of the photo walk.

18:00: Emily will go through her post-processing routine for street photography.

18:30: Workshop recap and final Q&A

What will you learn?
  • The basic rules of street photography and how to differentiate those that are important and those that are just a hindrance.
