About Entropies
Entropies are a cinematic musical project who document human stories through live sound and moving image. Featuring an array of instruments including vocals, keys, violin, cello, percussion and more, our music is a fusion of genres, from ambient pop to neo-classical cinematic. We adapt songs we have composed for BBC documentary films, and combine these with new songwriting, culminating in a musical style which unites raw storytelling with enduring melodies. Our work has been supported by Help Musicians and the Bert Jansch Foundation.
The evening
In the ‘Songs For Our Land’ performance, we will host a film screening, featuring the 23’ documentary 'BBC Our World: Turkey's Earthquake: Those Who Stayed' (dir. Sheida Kiran), and then perform a one hour live adaptation of the film’s score.
This is an extension of our sold out concert tour of this performance in London and Cambridge, in aid of charity relief for the February 2023 Turkey-Syria earthquakes.
About the film
Powerful earthquakes that struck in February 2023 left south-eastern Turkey facing a devastating aftermath. A year on, hundreds of thousands have left the region, and much of it still lies in ruins. Many local people have been left homeless, schools are destroyed, and crucial agricultural work is at risk. But the women who stayed are determined that their cities are rebuilt. As they confront this challenging task, their fears rise even further when construction plans pose a threat to their livelihoods. Our World follows the stories of women over the course of a year, as their roles as mothers and activists evolve in their fight to protect their home for the generations to come.
Directed by Sheida Kiran.
