What can you expect from this workshop?

This workshop will provide photographers with the essential skills to get started inside and outside of the studio. With this style of portraiture, the creative is in control of every element — and the priority is lighting. By the end of the day, you’ll comprehensively understand the requirements of lighting a model.

No advanced knowledge of lighting is required, but an understanding of camera fundamentals is recommended. This includes working in manual exposure mode, with a command of aperture, shutter speed and ISO.

Itinerary

Note: Please aim to arrive 15 minutes before your session time.

  • Arrive at the FUJIFILM House of Photography Studio for an introduction to James and your peers for the day.
  • The morning will consist of in-depth theory, covering lighting styles, modifiers and set-ups, as well as tips on working with models.
  • Break for a short lunch and an opportunity to mingle with your fellow enthusiasts.
  • Through the hours of the afternoon, apply your new skills, working with a model and brief.

What will you learn?

The practical and creative elements of portraiture go hand in hand. James will explore optimal camera and lens settings, as well as the tethering and integration of Capture One.

With an emphasis on creating distinctive looks, this workshop covers lighting theory, touching upon the quality of light and lighting styles. James will also teach the inverse square law and metering, which are essential steps in the process.

Finally, you’ll get to grips with modifiers – in relation to single sources, as well as multi-light set-ups.
