Led by Carl Hare, this Introduction to Motorsports Photography Workshop in Thruxton is ideal for anyone keen to learn the basic shooting settings and principles needed to capture the world of motorsports.
Who will be joining you?
As with all our photography workshops, your day at Thruxton Circuit will be led by one of our experienced specialists, providing you with guidance and support throughout the session.
Carl Hare
Hampshire-based Carl Hare pairs creative experience with technical know-how as a freelance photographer and FUJIFILM UK Product Specialist. His photography spans many genres, and while his professional roots trace back to weddings, Carl is equally adept at studio portraiture, street photography, landscapes and wildlife.
Keen to share his wealth of knowledge, Carl has delivered photography workshops for close to a decade. His passion for the outdoors is a constant source of inspiration, and when he can combine it with his teaching skills, there’s simply nothing better — for him and his students.
Who is this photography workshop suitable for?
We recommend this workshop for keen photography enthusiasts. You’ll already have a basic working understanding of aperture, shutter speed and ISO and will be looking to apply that to the world of motorsports photography.

What can you expect?
Based in the quiet and leafy village of Thruxton, lies a race circuit that has been at the heart of motor racing for over 60 years. Thruxton Circuit is one of the longest and fastest racetracks in the UK. With an average lap time of around 75 seconds, the track has 12 turns and hosts motorbike and motorcar racing over 12 days of competitive motorsport per year.
It provides an exciting setting for those embarking on a new creative journey and looking to learn the principles and techniques of motorsports photography. Carl will teach you through a mixture of explanation, demonstration and practical exercises.
Please note, this Introduction to Motorsports Photography Workshop is taking place on an open track day at the circuit. This means we won’t know which cars are running until we get to the track.

What will you learn?
Whichever cars are on the racecourse, you’ll be able to take lots of photos and finetune your skills. By the end of the photography workshop, you’ll be able to:
What kit do you need?
You’re welcome to bring your own set-up, although a variety of suitable FUJIFILM X Series and GFX products will be available on the day for you to try. We’ll also have a selection of 3-Legged Thing tripods available to use.
If you’d prefer to have your own selected equipment, you can arrange a free, 48-hour Try Before You Buy loan in advance.
As the UK weather is so unpredictable, please be sure to pack weather-appropriate clothing — if there are cars on the track, we will be photographing! Be prepared for changeable, wet and windy conditions. It’s also a good idea to bring a bottle of water and some snacks to keep you going.
Activity and mobility
All of the photography locations we’ll be using are next to the race track, so please be aware that the paths and walkways can get slippery and uneven, especially in adverse weather. It’s also worth noting that some shooting locations can be a bit of a walk away from the hospitality suite.
Although we will have a designated break time to rest, catch up and reset, there will be a lot of walking and time spent outside so we suggest packing comfortable shoes.
